SL WONG is a freelance writer who has been creating content professionally for 30 years for the print, broadcast and electronic media. With a degree in English and Economics (Australian National University) and background in newspaper and trade journalism, Siew Lyn also consults and does project management.

Clients include corporations, newspaper, magazine and book publishers, production houses, government agencies and non-governmental organisations. For projects, Siew Lyn draws on her network of specialist writers, photographers, designers, translators, web developers and production house associates.

Siew Lyn’s specialties are environmental and travel writing but her client base is broad and spans different areas. She has authored, edited and contributed to over 20 books, including travel guidebooks since 1997, as well as conservation publications on protected areas that range from Belum to Langkawi and the Maliau Basin.

Siew Lyn is also an occasional documentary filmmaker, with projects such as a Finas/Discovery Channel Asia documentary on the restoration of Stadium Merdeka, and a 10-episode Astro/TVIQ series on wildlife in captivity in Malaysia and Indonesia.

In online media, she headed content for a global expatriate portal headquartered in Hong Kong in 2000, and from 2001-2004, she developed and implemented a community based multimedia project on biodiversity and indigenous knowledge. A passion project of hers is a website of stories she built based on a four-year stint in Berlin.

In 2019, she returned to her journalism roots by co-founding environmental journalism portal Macaranga, for which she edits, writes and trains. The dream is to develop it into a media outfit that makes an impact in environmental and sustainability issues locally.

She has also volunteered with the Marine Special Interest Group of the Malaysian Nature Society and Shark Savers Malaysia.
